Late Thursday evening (April 14), Twitter and Facebook pages were suddenly filled with news of the Italian human rights activist, Vittorio Utopia Arrigoni, being kidnapped by a ‘Salafi’ Palestinian group. He was later found dead in an apartment in Gaza City.
Vittorio, a member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), had been living and documenting life in Gaza for several years and was one of the few human rights activists who remained within the Strip during Israel’s Operation Cast Lead. He was part of the Free Gaza movement that broke the illegal siege in 2008.
Many within the Palestinian movement have been following his video diaries and journalism for years now. He has documented the daily struggles of the Palestinians, monitored human rights violations and abuses perpetrated by Israel, as well as covering the subsequent Israeli war on Gaza. He authored “Gaza: Stay Human” in 2008, giving eye-witness accounts of Israeli war crimes. His work in Palestine has spanned almost a decade, explaining the realities of life under Israeli occupation to his Italian readership.
When the first reports emerged of an Italian human rights activist being abducted a group claiming to be Palestinian Salafi Jihadis claimed responsibility. They announced their disgruntlement with the way the Palestinian government in Gaza had been cracking down on their members over the past few years. In a video, the group gave Hamas 30 hours to release their members in return for Arrigoni’s release. Social networking sites, Facebook and Twitter were immediately flooded by concerned friends, family members and fellow activists,calling for his immediate release. Early Friday morning, reports began to emerge of a body being found hanged in an apartment in Gaza city.
The timing of this brutal murder has raised a few eyebrows amongst the movement. Not only have the main Salafi groups, such as The Tawhid and Jihad Salafi groups denied any connection with the murder and this previously unknown group. Human rights activists have pointed out that it seems only too convenient, as international activists are preparing to break the siege of Gaza via another flotilla that this has occurred. Somehuman rights activists have even suggested this may be a ploy orchestrated by Israel to undermine the ISM and intimidate its volunteers, with the help of Palestinian collaborators who wish to firstly destabilise the Hamas led government and secondly, make it more difficult for internationals to attempt to break the siege through flotillas or aid convoys.
Hamas official, Mahmoud Zahar denounced the murder at a rally earlier on Friday, suggesting it could not have taken place “without arrangements between all the parties concerned to keep the blockade imposed on Gaza”. Meanwhile, Hamas spokesman, Fawzi Barhoum, described the murder as “serious and shameful” adding, “what this group has perpetrated does not reflect the culture or customs of the Palestinian people who are open to [friendship] with all [people]”. He suggested the aim of those responsible was to bring chaos to streets of Gaza and to damage the popular solidarity movement with the besieged Gaza Strip.
Since the body was found early on Friday morning, two men have been arrested and security forces continue to look for other accomplices.
No internationals have been kidnapped within the Strip since the BBC journalist Alan Johnston, was kidnapped in 2007. Vittorio Arrigoni is the third ISM activist to be killed in the Gaza Strip; in 2003 Rachel Corrie, an activist from the US was crushed by an Israeli occupation military bulldozer and in 2004 Tom Hundall, a British activist was shot dead by an Israeli occupation soldier.
The next flotilla to Gaza will be called FREEDOM FLOTILLA-STAY HUMAN in commemoration of Arrigoni’s legacy as an activist and honorary Palestinian.

I believe The ARAB Revolutions shacked everything and everyone.. The ugliness of the forces of chaos (typically from the people in power) and some radical ideological groups (like Muslim Brother. and salafi’s) felt powerful too in the aftermath of the fall of the repression republics
but.. People and millions of them on the streets are the main player… from now on such united arab awakening is the major force.. and neither the people in power (now or before) nor such radical groups; have any real ability to move things..
so who would benefit from a step backward? a step like a salafi group killing a freedom fighter?
and if what we think is right?
How can we creatively counter act such an act?

hi, sorry for viewing what you posted late. I agree and I know for the fact that all what’s happening in murdering such people is impossible to be done by an arab and esecially a palestinian. How can they do this andhe is supporting them and showing the world the true picture of what is happening in Gaza. Gaza has sufferred alot since 1967 and they are still strong. We have to admit that all the Arab revolutions had really awaken most of us as Arabs and now I can see people are talking and discussing freely. Thanks to Tunisia, a big Thanks to Egypt and God be with the other countries. We should be proud of ourselves

Also the killing of Juliano Khamis last week, the Palestinian activist, who served the Palestinians and Palestinian cause a lot, was done by Israeli Mossad. No way I can believe that any Palestinian would do that.
There was no benefit for Palestinians by his death; the opposite it was a loss….I knew Juliano from close and if he was alive today he will tell the same……
Counter act starts by bringing justice. His murderers must be Chased and prosecuted. I’m so sad and angry to be creative khaled 😦

The occidental world has been emerged by all those news and information about the Arab world…& this time, the technology played an important and positive roll by delivering the truth about this HISTORICAL revolution, eyes and minds started to see more clear …..
The support & interest for the Arab world and Palestine (in particular) has became bigger, and this is a threat for the Israeli government, so something has to be done…..unfortunately, it’s VITTORIO who paid with his life….

I plan not to follow conspiracy theories .. Palestinians killed Vittorio, and that’s the fact.
Whether the Israeli Mossad was behind this murder or not, the truth is that there are groups in Palestine and especially in Gaza that took the radical Islam as a political tool, and in this “political” view it is ok to kill non-believers, not only in Islam, but also in your “Mazhab”.
Palestinians killed Vittorio .. I am so sorry and so shocked by this brutal action, but knowing the problem is the first step to solve it.
Sorry Vittorio, and sorry for everybody who expects all the people to accuse Israel for Vittorio’s murder, but denial ain’t the solution!

It is definitely Israel behind this crime, I am not burring my head in sand … I know we have a problem with Islamic fundamentalism & we should give this issue lots of our hard work .. this incident highlight two important issues .. (ISM) great effect on international conscience; what makes it even more important to make all necessary arrangements to facilitate work of & protect (ISM) activist by Palestinian Government & people.
The second important Issue (which is raised in all Arab-Islamic countries) is how to deal with fundamentalism without incriminating them in advance & open all necessary dialogue needed. This interaction has to be made on large scale & not only to be exclusive elite style!
To counter-act this means that Palestenians had something to do with his murder, now if you mean the play performed by salafis then we will have to ask ourselves who are those Salafis & where do they come from anyway? parties in Palestine are known & what I know for sure is Salafi group was not a part of political life untill recently. Now, why did not Israel just murder him like it did with the previous two??? why the kidnap & negotiation then quick murder?? This is all new to Palestine, we know when Hamas wants to show itself it sends a rocket a bit like fire works & thats it, we know that fate7 is acting the deplomatic role on the expense of its own people but both would never get themselves involved in such a game because they know consequences. The “Counter Act” needs to be performed by palestenian parties fighting for powe over OCCUPIED Palestine, they want to be the right hand of Israel I believe in making people’s life worse than it already is. now how to establish unity is a differenet issue, you are talking about a system under occupation so inernal & external factors will impact life in Palestine.
Are the salafi’s new to the palestinian society? They should have been there all the past years! Why now!
The rise of the western and israeli voice of warning towards Muslim brotherhood in Egypt .. “el takfeer w el hegra” .. Salafis and sufi’s ….etc wether out of social or political islamophobia is a prepared media settlement to settle down the international opinion towards the arab world and palestine specially.
israel is working hard to persuade countries; governments and peoples, that the arabs should be killed .. From the media control point of view, it’s much bigger than a merder of an activist .. The picture is wider!
Arab youth are preparing for “gom3et el nafeer” & “a7ad el za7f” for the third palestinian “intifada” and with the arab situation on the political and revolutionary side .. Israel is in an unexpected danger which makes Hilary Clinton declares that both the palestinian and the israeli governemnts should be merged in one society!!!! Such declaration wether indecates israelian fear of the revolutions in arab world (regarding mentioning more than a time camp david agreement), or that there will be a media campain as usual to persuade the world that the arabs are killing eachothers and they should be killed in return! In an enhancement for the israeli image made by the jewish CIAian Hollywood and the media made allover the world .. it’s not that far from us gazza in 2010 and sabra & shateela where they were trying to persuade the international that the arabs are killing eachother! Should be lebeded by a way or another .. it’s wellknown that in a military war if u don’t use media as your 1st periority effective weapon u’ll lose.
Note: ha’arts (an israeli newspaper) wrote a couple of days ago that there were thousands of americans ready to join the israeli military service .. In cooperation with a jewish american organization called “israel our land” .. On the other hand the president of the organization is accused these days of many embezzelemts during his last work in the israeli parliment – note: this is not the 1st time for him to be accused of something like that but the investigations will be closed like every time, confirmed his lawyer!

Media is a great effective doubled weapon!
This coldblooded murder really broke my heart. To think the very people he was there defending and helping them in their struggle against oppression would do this. However, this is yet another case of extremism. The actions of those few extremists or ‘Salafis’ do not in any shape or form represent that of the Palestinian people or even their governments (which includes Hamas). I think the key is to educate the masses, both Muslims and ‘westerners’. I personally believe that many actions committed by such extremists are because of the harsh and dire conditions they live in. As a result they are easily emotionally and psychologically manipulated to believe everyone from outside is trying to kill them or somehow oppressing them more. These people need to be educated to withstand such brainwashing. Secondly, the West need to understand that just like all other religions and ethnicities, we too have our extremists and yet the media chooses to perpetuate and magnify their actions, even though in reality they only represent a very small percentage of terrorist acts globally. This has been our ongoing struggle since 9/11 and must continue because Islam as a religion is peaceful, beautiful and moderate, however not everyone understands this (for many different reasons, whether it be misinformation, brainwashing, misunderstanding etc.) so ultimately it is our job to get that message across.
Sorry for rambling, but my final point is that we need to show our support and condolences to his family, friends and show our support and love for their amazing courage and consciousness. We need to show them that they are not alone and that we are all behind them and struggling alongside them.

The fact that the Salafi group purported to have kidnapped and murdered #Vittorio denied having anything to do w/it is an indicator that something is definitely up. Radical Islamist groups almost always take credit for their actions as a way to boast. I wouldn’t put it past the Israelis to have had a hand in this. Read Victor Ostrovsky’s books to get a better handle about the Mossad and what they are capable of.

I’m not sure what you’re asking to counter exactly, the salafi movement itself or the bad media backlash for tourists or what exactly?
If you’re asking to counter the salafi movement, people much more experienced than you and I have been trying that exact thing for at least 9 years to very little progress. If you want to counter any ideology that could do such an aggregious act of murder you must study the root cause of the act in conjunction with the ideology and social circumstance surrounding it.
A good question to really ask is this: why is the salafi movement so active now? Have these Arab revolutions awakened a sleeping monster? If so, do we sacrifice some of our new found freedoms in order to tame these dangerous movements?
If these are the questions you want answers to a blog is hardly where you’ll find those answers.

Unfortunately, it always has been very easy to control and manipulate people thru religions; specially now the majority of the people in Arab countries are very poor; where you have poor people, you have religion control, the proof is the voting for the amendment of Egyptian constitution.
Poverty leads to ignorance, since people are worried how to survive day by day, and they live with fear of what the future is hiding for them…..

Khaled, I agree with the article you posted. It seems all too fishy that a Salafi group would pick this man in particular … It’s far-fetched, though it’s certainly possible that they might target a foreigner. However, we all know Mossad is capable of some pretty awful things … So, wouldn’t put it past them either.

All the experiences show us that Egypt is the leader in every thing ,if you see what happened here in Egypt, all the rumors that we heard about salafieein and later we discover that they didn’t do any thing ,you will simply understand that some parties in Palestine ”which want to show the world that Palestinians are terrors ” are playing dirty game and they have exceeded there master devils in Egypt because they saw that rumors do nothing, so they wanted to be real blood that will show the hole world a lesson they will never forget about Palestinians

ما حصل هو جريمه بكل ما في الكلمه من معنى , وهذا لا يصب في مصلحه القضيه الفلسطينيه.
ليس من حق اي انسان ان يقتل اخاه الانسان مهما كان وجه الاختلاف بينهما: مبدئيا, عرقيا, دينيا, عقائديا, الخ….
بالاضافه الى كل ذلك, هو لم يفعل اي شئ ضد مصلحه الفلسطينيين, بل بالعكس هو وهب وقته الثمين من اجل الدفاع عن حقوق الشعب الفلسطيني. قتله هو قمه البشاعه وعدم الانسانيه وايضا يُضعف المقاومه الفلسطينيه. لا استطيع فهم المبرر لقتله (مع اني لا اقبل اي مبرر لاي قتل).
من اليوم يترك عائلته وحياته النعيمه ليذهب الى غزه ويدافع عن حقوق الانسان هناك. هو بلا شك من القديسين الذين تكلمت عنهم كل الاديان عبر التاريخ البشرى; هو ليس فلسطيني ولا عربي ولا مسلم, ورغم ذلك دافع عن الحق الفلسطيني وعن العدل…. كم اشعر بالحرج ازائه…
